Day trips from Leonidio

Day trip to the Parnon mountains: Kosmas and Kastanitsa

Cool air, plane trees, stone villages and slow-cooked food. A mountain loop that fills a day without rushing it.

The short answer

The coast in the morning, the mountains at lunch.

From the east coast, the Parnon mountains are about an hour away. The road climbs through pine and chestnut forest to two of the prettiest villages in the Peloponnese.

Kosmas is the classic first stop, a village around a square shaded by huge plane trees. Kastanitsa is a Tsakonian village built of white stone in chestnut woods. Between them there are viewpoints, forest tracks and some very good places to eat.

It is a good day for the hottest weeks of summer, and for anyone who wants a slower pace after a few days on the beach.

Kosmas

About 40 minutes from the hotel. Coffee in the square, spring water and spoon sweets.

Stop 2

Kastanitsa

One of the oldest Tsakonian villages, in white stone and chestnut woods.

Stop 3

Mountain viewpoints

Roadside clearings and short forest tracks with wide views over valleys and sea.

Stop 4

Lunch

A taverna in Kosmas or on the mountain road, with tables under the plane trees.

Our tip

Drive the loop in this order. The descent to the sea in the afternoon light is the best part of the day.

Kosmas

The village square.

Kosmas is the classic Parnon mountain village and the best first stop. It sits around a big central square covered by plane trees, with a spring that runs all day.

Order coffee, taste the mountain water and try the traditional spoon sweets, made with walnut, rose or quince. Then wander the small stone alleys. It feels calm, unhurried and much cooler than the coast.

From Kosmas you can also walk into the Parnon forest, or drive on to Elona Monastery, which is just below the village.

Kastanitsa

White stone and chestnut woods.

Kastanitsa is one of the oldest Tsakonian villages. It is built entirely from pale stone and surrounded by chestnut forest, and it is peaceful even in high season.

Explore the stone houses and narrow paths, look in at the small folklore museum if it is open, and buy chestnut products from the local shops. Short walks around the edge of the forest are easy for most people.

Lunch

What to eat in the mountains.

The best places to eat are in Kosmas or in one of the small tavernas on the mountain road. Most have tables outside under the plane trees.

Try

Slow-cooked goat

The speciality of Kosmas.

Try

Mountain greens and salads

Try

Baked feta

In cold months

Rustic soups and local pasta

Before you set off

A few practical tips.

The roads wind, so take your time and keep the day loose. A light jacket is useful even in summer. Comfortable shoes help if you want to walk around the villages. The spring water in Kosmas is safe and delicious.

The route is short and easy, with plenty of safe places to stop, which makes it a good day out with children. Most people are back on the coast between 4 and 5 pm, in time for the pool, the sunset or the spa.

Our tip

Ask us at reception which taverna is open. Some close on weekday afternoons outside summer.

Questions

Before you go.

How far are the Parnon mountains from Leonidio?

Kosmas is about 40 minutes from Sampatiki and about an hour by the full loop through Kastanitsa. The roads wind, so allow more time than the map suggests.

What is there to do in Kosmas?

Drink coffee under the plane trees, taste the spring water, try spoon sweets and walk the stone alleys. It is also the start of walks into the Parnon forest.

When is the best time for a mountain day trip?

May to October. It is a good escape from the summer heat, because the villages are much cooler than the coast.

Do you need a car?

Yes. A car makes this loop far easier, because bus services to the villages are limited.
