Leonidio, Peloponnese: a guide to the red-cliff town

A small town under a tall red cliff, between the Parnon mountains and the sea. Here is how to get there, what to do, when to go and where to stay.

The short answer

A small town under a red cliff.

Leonidio sits on the east coast of the Peloponnese, in a valley of citrus groves, at the foot of a wall of red limestone. The sea is a few minutes away and the Parnon mountains are right behind it.

It is known for three things: some of the best rock climbing in Greece, walking trails that start from the town itself, and a slow, local way of life that the busier parts of the peninsula have lost. It is also a good base for the whole region, with Nafplio, Monemvasia and Mystras each within a day trip.

We run a small hotel above the harbour at Sampatiki, about seven kilometres from the town, so this guide comes from people who live here.

Getting there

Between Nafplio and Monemvasia.

Leonidio is in the Arcadia region, on the coast road that runs south from Nafplio towards Monemvasia. From Athens, take the national road towards Tripoli and follow the signs for Leonidio. The last stretch drops through the mountains to the sea, and the views start well before you arrive.

A car is the easiest way to see the area, above all for beaches and mountain villages. There is also an intercity bus from the Kifissos terminal in Athens. Timetables change with the season, so check them before you plan around them.

Our tip

Arrive in daylight if you can. The mountain roads wind, and the last descent to the coast is best taken slowly.

The town

What Leonidio feels like.

Climbing in Leonidio

The cliff is the first thing you see and it changes colour through the day, from pale pink at breakfast to deep red at sunset. Below it are narrow streets, neoclassical mansions and small squares where people still stop to talk.

Leonidio is also the gateway to the Tsakonian villages. Tsakonian is a rare dialect that comes down from ancient Doric Greek and is still spoken in places above the town. The area is known for its slim purple aubergines, which you will find on most menus, and for a market and shops that sell local honey, herbs and crafts.

It is a working town, not a resort. Come to walk, climb, swim and eat, and to enjoy a place that does not perform for visitors.

Mount Parnon rises straight behind the town.

What to do

Eight things to do in Leonidio.

A few days is enough to do most of these at an easy pace.

Walk

Hike from the town to the cliff monastery

The path to Agios Nikolaos Sintzas climbs from Leonidio to a monastery built into the red rock. Allow four to five hours for the round trip.

See

Visit Elona Monastery

A women’s monastery on the Parnon cliff at about 650 metres. Dress modestly and combine it with Kosmas.

Climb

Try the limestone

Thousands of sport routes, from slabs to tufas, and local guides for beginners. The season runs from autumn to spring.

Swim

Plaka and Poulithra

Plaka is the harbour beach closest to the town, with tavernas on the front. Poulithra is a quieter bay to the south.

Cross

St George church at Poulithra

A small blue-and-white chapel on the shore, reached on foot along the coast or by boat.

Drive

Kosmas and Kastanitsa

Two stone mountain villages, with plane trees, spring water and slow-cooked food.

Eat

Local tavernas

Order the aubergines, the local cheeses and whatever fish came in that morning.

Explore

Take a day trip

Monemvasia is a walled medieval town on a rock, within easy reach for the day.

Our tip

Spread the active days out. Walk or climb in the morning, swim in the afternoon, and keep the evening for a long dinner.

When to go

Four seasons, four trips.

Leonidio works all year, but each season suits something different. Pick the one that matches what you want to do.

Spring

Wildflowers and walking weather

Warm days, green hillsides and the best months for long hikes.

Summer

Sea, harbour tavernas and evenings out

Hot inland, so walk early and swim in the afternoon.

Autumn

A warm sea and the climbing season opens

Fewer people, soft light and the sea still swimmable into October.

Winter

Mild, quiet and popular with climbers

The south-facing cliffs stay climbable and the town is calm.

Where to stay

A quiet base by the sea.

You can stay in the town, but many visitors prefer to be on the coast with a view. Our hotel sits above the harbour at Sampatiki, about seven kilometres from Leonidio. It has eleven suites with sea views, an infinity pool, a spa with a sauna and Jacuzzi, and a daily breakfast built around local produce.

It suits people who want to walk or climb in the day and come back to somewhere calm. Beaches, the town and the trailheads are all a short drive away, and the rest of the Peloponnese is within reach on day trips.
