A long strip of white pebbles and very clear water, backed by mountains and pine. One of the loveliest beaches on the east coast.
The short answer
Fokianos is a wide, quiet beach on the east coast of the Peloponnese. The pebbles are bright, the water is clear enough to snorkel, and a couple of tavernas mean you can spend the day.
It rewards a little effort. The drive winds through mountain roads, olive groves and forest, and the last stretch opens onto the sea.
Go early for the calmest swim, and plan to be back before dark, because the mountain road is narrow.

Getting there
From our hotel at Sampatiki, allow about 45 to 60 minutes. The road winds through mountains, olive groves and forest before it drops to the coast, and the last section reveals the bright strip of pebbles.
You can also walk in. An old footpath runs from the village of Poulithra to the bay, about 12 kilometres there and back, and it makes a good half-day hike with a swim at the end.

Our tip
Leave early. The car park and the tavernas are calm in the morning and busier by midday in July and August.
The road drops to the bay from the hills above.
Why go
Water
Good for swimming, snorkelling or floating. The sea has an almost Caribbean quality.
Setting
A backdrop of mountains and pine gives it a remote, untouched feel.
Food
A couple of tavernas serve fresh fish, Greek dishes and cold drinks, so you can stay all day.

The beach is long and wide, even on busy summer days.
Tips
Bring water shoes if you want extra comfort on the pebbles. Take sun protection and shade, because the beach has little natural cover. Stay for lunch at a taverna, which is one of the highlights.
It suits couples, friends and families alike, and it fits neatly into a day from Sampatiki. When you get back, the pool and the spa are a good way to end it.
