Peloponnese travel guide
The peninsula is big, and where you stay shapes the trip. A short guide to the main bases, with an honest view of who each suits.
The short answer
Most visitors are happier with one or two bases than with a new hotel every night. Choose by what you want your mornings to look like.
For culture and restaurants, stay in Nafplio. For a quiet coast, walking and climbing, stay on the east coast. For wild landscapes, stay in the Mani. For long beaches, look at Messinia.
We run a hotel on the east coast, so that is the area we know best. We are open about which base suits which trip.

Nafplio

East coast
Best for wild scenery
The Mani
Best for long beaches
Messinia
The main bases
Nafplio
Close to Mycenae and Epidaurus, with a lively old town. Busy on summer weekends.
Monemvasia
Magical and small. Best for one or two nights rather than a week.
East coast (Leonidio)
Red cliffs, pebble beaches and mountains a short drive away. Slower and more local.
The Mani
Remote and dramatic, with fewer facilities. Good for a night or two.
Messinia (Kalamata, Pylos)
A good base for the west, and convenient for the Kalamata airport.
Arcadian mountains
Villages such as Kosmas or Dimitsana. Good in summer, quiet in winter.
Nafplio, the easiest base for a first visit.
Our view
The east coast has the mix we like: real beaches, mountains and a working town, with the great sights within a day’s drive. It is not on the standard route, so it stays quiet.
Our hotel at Sampatiki has eleven sea-view suites, a pool, a spa and a breakfast built around local produce, a few minutes from Leonidio.
How to choose
If you want to see many sites in a short time, stay in Nafplio. If you want to swim, walk and rest, stay on the east coast. If you have ten days, use two or three bases and let each one set the pace.
Our tip
Avoid moving every night. Two or three nights per base is the minimum that feels like a holiday.
From us at Sampatiki

Questions
Where is the best place to stay in the Peloponnese?
It depends on the trip. Nafplio suits first-timers who want culture. The east coast around Leonidio suits beaches, walking and climbing, with a quiet feel.
Is it better to stay in one place or move around?
Two or three bases work best. Moving every night leaves little time to enjoy the places.
Where should I stay for beaches?
Messinia has the longest sandy beaches. The east coast has quiet pebble beaches and clear water.
Do I need a car?
A car helps in nearly every region, above all for beaches and villages.
