Peloponnese itinerary
A ten-day road trip from Athens that takes in the classics, a quiet stretch of coast, Mystras and the Mani, without racing.
The short answer
Ten days is enough to see the highlights and still have slow days. The plan below uses four bases so that you unpack rarely and drive in short stretches.
You start with Nafplio and the ancient sites, then spend four nights on the quiet east coast. After that you head south to Mystras and the Mani, and finish in Kalamata or back in Athens.
Drive times are approximate. Mountain roads wind, so add time.

Nafplio, east coast, Mani, Kalamata
Driving
Short stretches, longest about 3 hrs
Best months
April to June, September to October
The route
Day 1
Drive via the Corinth Canal and stop at Ancient Corinth on the way. Evening in Nafplio.
Day 2
Walk the old town, climb to the Palamidi fortress and eat by the harbour.
Day 3
See both sites in the morning, then drive to the east coast, about two hours.
Days 4 to 7
Beaches, Elona Monastery and the mountains, and a day trip to Monemvasia.
Day 8
Explore the Byzantine city early, before the heat.
Day 9
Areopoli, Vathia and the Diros caves.
Day 10
Fly out of Kalamata, or drive back to Athens in about three hours.
Our tip
Stay four nights on the east coast rather than two. It is where the trip slows down and you get a proper break from driving.
Mystras, on day 8.
Where to sleep
Nafplio
Walkable and full of restaurants.
Mani
A tower house or a small hotel on the coast.
Kalamata
Convenient for the airport.
Practical notes
Hire a car at Athens airport. Fill the tank before mountain stretches, and keep small change for tavernas that prefer cash.
Book the east coast and the Mani in advance in high summer, because they have fewer rooms. In April, May and October you can be more flexible.
From us at Sampatiki

Questions
Is ten days too long for the Peloponnese?
No. Ten days let you see the classics and still have slow days. Many people find a week too short to add Mystras and the Mani.
Do you need a car?
Yes. The route covers several regions, and a car makes the beaches and villages far easier.
What is the best time of year?
April to June and September to October give warm days, a swimmable sea and fewer people than July and August.
Can you fly out of Kalamata?
Yes. Kalamata has an airport, which makes a one-way route from Athens practical.
