Day trips from Leonidio

Day trips from Leonidio: Monemvasia, Nafplio, Mystras and more

The east coast is a quiet base, and most of the Peloponnese’s great sights are a day’s drive away. Here is what is realistic, and how to plan each.

The short answer

Sleep by the sea, see the sights by day.

From Leonidio and Sampatiki you can reach Monemvasia, Nafplio, Mystras, Mycenae and Epidaurus in a day, and the mountain villages in half a day.

Drive times are approximate and depend on the road and the season. Set off early, take water and plan a long lunch.

We suggest no more than one big day trip for every two days on the coast.

About 1 hr 45

Nafplio

Venetian streets, a harbour and the Palamidi fortress.

About 2 hrs

Mystras

A Byzantine hilltop city and UNESCO World Heritage site. Go early, because it is hot and exposed.

The ancient theatre and the Bronze Age citadel. Combine the two in one day.

About 50 minutes

Kosmas and Mount Parnon

Fir forest, a mountain square and cool air in summer.

About 25 minutes

A cliff monastery, easily combined with Kosmas.

Our tip

Group the ancient sites on one day and keep Monemvasia for another. It is tiring to combine them.

Mystras is about two hours from the east coast.

Plan it

How to pace the week.

If you are staying a week, alternate: a day trip, then a slow day at the beach or on a trail. Leaving early helps you beat the heat and the coach groups.

If you have children, choose Kosmas, Elona or Monemvasia, which are the easiest days out.
