Peloponnese travel guide
Ancient sites, walled towns, wild coast and mountain villages. Here are the places we would send a friend, grouped by region so you can plan a route.
The short answer
The Peloponnese is a large peninsula and it rewards patience. The famous sites are close together, but the best trips mix one or two of them with a quiet coast or a mountain village.
We have grouped the fifteen places below by region. Pick two or three regions for a week, and stay put for a few nights in each, rather than driving every day.
We live on the east coast, so we know that part best. We say so where it matters.

14
A lively city on the sea, known for its olives and a good place to fly into.
15
The birthplace of the Olympic Games, with a museum and a large site in green surroundings.
Our tip
Messinia and Olympia are in the west. They fit a longer trip, or a separate one.
Putting it together
For five days, take Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus and one stretch of coast. For a week, add Monemvasia and a few nights on the east coast. For ten days, add Mystras and the Mani.
Roads wind, and distances look shorter on the map than they feel. Allow more time than you think.

Questions
What are the best places to visit in the Peloponnese?
Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Monemvasia and Mystras are the classics. For quiet coast and mountains, add Leonidio, Kosmas and the east coast beaches. In the south, the Mani; in the west, Pylos, Kalamata and Olympia.
How many days do you need?
Five days show one or two regions properly. A week is comfortable, and ten days let you add Mystras and the Mani.
Which is the best base for first-timers?
Nafplio is the easiest, with restaurants, museums and sites nearby. For a quiet coast, try the east coast around Leonidio.
Do you need a car?
A car helps a great deal, above all for beaches and villages. Buses link the main towns, but timetables are limited.
