Pylos and Voidokilia: the most photogenic bay in Greece

A perfect crescent of sand around a lagoon, a Venetian-Ottoman castle above a deep natural harbour and a Bronze Age palace. The southwest of the Peloponnese at its best.

The short answer

A bay worth the drive.

Pylos sits on Navarino Bay, one of the safest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, and is a pleasant small town with a castle, a harbour and a leafy square. A few kilometres north, Voidokilia is a curved beach shaped like the Greek letter omega.

It is a long way from the east coast, so it works best as part of a longer trip around the Peloponnese. But it is one of the most beautiful places in the whole region.

We run a small hotel on the east coast and send guests here when they have a few days to spare. This is what we would tell them.

What to see

Six reasons to go.

The bay

Voidokilia beach

A near-perfect crescent of pale sand around a shallow lagoon, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Walk up the headland for the shape and the view.

The castle

Neokastro

One of the best-preserved castles in Greece, an Ottoman fortress above Navarino Bay with a church inside the walls.

The harbour

Pylos and Navarino Bay

A relaxed town of arcaded houses around a leafy square, on a bay that has served ships for centuries. The 1827 naval battle of Navarino was fought here.

The island

Sphacteria

A long, narrow island that closes the bay like a natural breakwater, with trails and a historic story.

The lagoon

Gialova lagoon

A wetland of national importance for birds, with hundreds of species, including flamingos at some times of year.

The palace

The Palace of Nestor

A well-preserved Bronze Age palace about 17 kilometres north, with finds in the museum at Chora.

Our tip

Go to Voidokilia in the evening, when the light is soft and the beach is quieter. Wear sandals for the climb to the headland.

Eat and swim

A relaxed town and a long swim.

Eat in Pylos on the harbour or the square, where simple tavernas serve fish, salads and local olive oil. In the evenings the town is calm and pleasant.

Swimming at Voidokilia is gentle in the shallow lagoon side and fresher on the sea side. The sand shelves slowly, which makes it good for a long, easy swim.

Pylos and the east coast

A long leg on a bigger trip.

Pylos is a long way from Leonidio, so we suggest it as part of a longer trip, perhaps after the Mani or Kalamata, rather than a day trip. A night or two here makes a rewarding end to a journey around the southwest.

From the east coast, plan three or four days with us for the beaches, the trails and the red cliffs first, and keep the west for a later trip.

From us at Sampatiki

The southwest is a long trip, so we suggest it for the end of a longer journey. Start with a few days on the east coast with us, and we can help you plan the route.
