Day trip to Monemvasia from Leonidio

A walled medieval town on a rock in the sea, reached by a short causeway. Start early, walk slowly and stay for lunch.

The short answer

A town that looks like a stone ship.

Monemvasia is a Byzantine fortress town on a rock joined to the mainland by a causeway. Cars stay outside, and the old town is a maze of stone lanes, small churches and sea views.

It is one of the most impressive places in the Peloponnese and a good day trip from the east coast. Set off early, walk the lower town first and save the climb to the upper town for the cooler end of the day.

This guide comes from our own visits, so it also says where to eat and what to skip.

Our tip

The road south is winding. Fill the tank before you go and take a bottle of water.

The lower town

Walk the stone alleys.

Wander the narrow lanes lined with Byzantine houses, small boutiques and restored mansions. The town feels like a maze, so moving slowly is part of the pleasure.

Look for the small churches, the sea gates and the terraces on the wall, where you can sit and watch the water.

Terracotta roofs and open sea from the old town.

The upper town

The climb is worth it.

If you are up for a climb, walk to the fortified upper town. You get panoramic views over the Aegean, the old defensive walls and the restored church of Agia Sophia.

Bring water and comfortable shoes, and go later in the day when the stone has cooled.

Best in the late afternoon light.

Eat and shop

Lunch with a view.

There are good places to eat inside the castle: tavernas with simple dishes such as fresh fish, grilled meats and Greek salads, and cafés with balconies over the sea. Walk a little deeper into the town to avoid the busiest spots near the entrance.

Small shops sell handmade jewellery, local wine and tsipouro, olive oil products and rustic home decor. Finish with a coffee or dessert by the walls. The late light is beautiful for photographs.

Our tip

Book a table if you want a balcony. Places with sea views fill up at lunchtime in summer.
