Greece in September: the warmest sea and the best light

The summer crowds thin, the sea is at its warmest and the evenings are long and soft. Why September is many people’s favourite month on the Peloponnese.

The short answer

Summer weather, without the summer rush.

September on the Peloponnese is warm and bright, with daytime highs around 28 degrees and the sea at its warmest of the year, roughly 25 degrees. The first week still feels like summer, and from mid-month the crowds fade and the air becomes gentler.

It is an ideal time for swimming, sightseeing and long dinners outdoors. Rain is rare, and the days are still long enough for a full programme.

On the east coast, September is the month we most often tell friends to visit: the beaches are calm, the sea is like a bath and the villages return to their own pace.

Six ideas for September.

Swim

The warmest sea of the year

Long, easy swims at Plaka, Poulithra and Fokianos, with plenty of room on the sand.

Walk

Early walks in the mountains

Start early and the trails above Leonidio are lovely before the heat builds.

See

Ancient sites after the crowds

Go early and the sites are calm, with soft light.

Eat

Grapes and figs

September is the grape harvest in much of Greece, with figs and late tomatoes in the markets.

Sail

Boat days

Calm seas make boat trips along the coast easy, for example to the chapel of St George.

Wander

Monemvasia at dusk

The walled town is magical when the light turns violet and the day visitors leave.

Our tip

Book early for the first half of the month. Many guests choose September, so good rooms and tables fill up.

Evenings draw in

The sun sets noticeably earlier than in July. Plan your last swim before sunset.

Crowds

Quieter from mid-month

The first week can still be busy. The second half is calmer.

On the east coast

How we see the month.

On the east coast September is the sweet spot: summer sea, calm beaches and an easy pace. We suggest three or four nights on the coast, with a day in Nafplio and one in Monemvasia.
