Greece in May: green hills, quiet sites and the first swims

Wildflower hills, empty ancient sites and a sea that is just warm enough for the brave. Why May is a gem on the Peloponnese.

The short answer

Spring at its freshest.

May on the Peloponnese is warm and green, with daytime highs around 25 degrees. The hills still carry their spring colour, the sites are quiet and the sea is around 19 degrees, which is fine for a quick swim if you do not mind a little freshness.

It is one of the best months for walking and sightseeing: long days, soft light and almost no crowds. Rain is rare and the heat of summer is still weeks away.

On our coast, May is when the villages wake up, the tavernas reopen and the trails are at their best.
