Greece in October: why the Peloponnese is the smart choice

The sea is still warm, the crowds have gone and the light turns golden. Here is what Greece is like in October, and why the mainland beats the islands at this time of year.

The short answer

The best of late summer, without the crowds.

October in the Peloponnese is still warm, with daytime highs around 22 degrees and a sea that holds its summer warmth, at roughly 23 degrees. The beaches are quiet, the ancient sites are calm and the first autumn rains begin to freshen the hills.

Many island hotels and restaurants start closing in late October, but on the mainland most of life carries on. Towns, villages and sites stay open, and the roads are empty. It is a gentle, easy time to travel.

We run a small hotel on the east coast, so October is a month we know well: the swimming is still good, the climbing season begins and the light on the red cliffs is superb.

What to do

Six ideas for October.

Swim

Beaches without the crowds

The sea is still warm enough for a proper swim, and the pebble beaches around Leonidio and Fokianos are almost empty.

Walk

Trails in cooler air

The heat has gone, so trails such as the gorge to Elona Monastery are at their most pleasant.

Climb

The season begins

Late October is when climbers return to Leonidio, and the festival at the start of November marks the start of the winter season.

Visit

Ancient sites in peace

Mycenae, Epidaurus and Mystras are calmer than in summer, with softer light.

Eat

Chestnuts and new wine

Autumn brings chestnuts in the mountain villages and the new season’s flavours in the tavernas.

Wander

Nafplio and Monemvasia

Both are at their best when the day-trippers have gone home.

Our tip

Pack a light rain jacket. October is the start of the wetter season, but the showers usually pass quickly.

Good to know

What to expect.

Daylight

Shorter days

The sun sets earlier than in summer, so start your days sooner and plan your evenings.

Weather

Mostly sunny, some rain

Showers become more likely through the month. Check the forecast before long trips.

Closures

The islands wind down

Many island hotels and ferries reduce service late in the month, which is another reason to choose the mainland.

Prices

Often lower

Shoulder-season rates are common, especially after the first week.

On the east coast

How we see the month.

On the east coast October is one of our favourite months: warm swims in the morning, walks in the afternoon and the first climbers arriving for the winter season. If you are planning an autumn trip, three or four nights on the coast fit well with a few days in Nafplio.
